Mary's Wheeling :: Ohio Valley Medical Center

What is "Your Wheeling"?

My Wheeling is the OVMC. It has been a part of so much of my life both personally and professionally. From being a student nurse there, to meeting my husband, to having my son, teaching new nurses, and losing my father--OVMC has been a part of so much of my life.

Are you born and raised here? If so why did you stay?

Most of my childhood was spent in New Martinsville. So not born and raised but every year my Mom would bring me to Wheeling for school shopping--Stone and Thomas, L S Good and if course a stop at Stones Tea room! I also remember coming to the 'big city' for movies and then maybe DiCarlos pizza or Elby's Big Boy.

I came to Nursing School at OVGH School of Nursing. When I was little I read Cherry Ames books (Cherry Ames--Student Nurse, Cruise Nurse, Surgical Nurse, etc.) and knew I wanted to be a nurse. My Guidance Counselor at Magnolia High had yearbooks from OV and it seemed like it would be a great place to go to school--lots of activities and classes. The Counselor said the best thing was that I would get lots of actual experience working with patients--sounded good to me--and gave me the best foundation anyone could ask for in nursing.  I could go to school but be close to home.

What is your favorite Wheeling business and why?

There are many--a couple that stand out to me are: Figarettis and the Alpha. Both are tied to great memories for me. My Mom would pick me up at OV and would take me to have dinner at Figarettis--there weren't many Italian places in New Martinsville! I still think they have the best lasagna! The Alpha was a favorite 'hang out' in Nursing school. We would go to Wheeling College games and then head over to the Alpha. I still look forward to stopping by the Alpha.
